The challenge of changing jobs

Be brave in taking on a change

Handling sudden changes is often challenging, especially job changes which leave many people helpless, not knowing what to do. But life is not always smooth sailing. The only thing you can do is to take the crisis as an opportunity and look for a way out. Assessing your own ability and knowing your special characteristics will help you enter a new stage in your career.

Turning from defence into offence

  • Widen your network, contact friends and relatives, and expand your opportunities for finding a new job.
  • Give play to the flexibility and resilience of a Hong Konger; do not insist on returning to your old field.
  • Try to accept different positions and work fields. Your main aim should be to get back into the job market, where you can not only maintain a basic livelihood but also develop new skills and raise your own competitiveness.
  • Sign up for interesting retraining courses. Move to the mainland job market or start your own business.

The ways to deal with change

  • It is crucial to stay confident and competitive, and to plan your activities everyday.
  • Never go into hiding or lose your will. You must stay in close contact with the community.
  • Put your self-respect aside; complaining will only upset your feelings.
  • Encourage yourself. Tell yourself that the hard times are only temporary, that tomorrow will be better.
